PUMA X POKÉMON 30TH ANNIVERSARY COLLAB: THE SHOES HIT, THE CLOTHES MISS

PUMA just dropped a full Pokémon collection for the franchise's 30th anniversary and honestly? The clothing left me unbothered. But the sneakers are a different conversation entirely.

This is a big collab on paper. PUMA. Pokémon. Thirty years of the highest-grossing media franchise in the world. The expectation is there. The execution, though, is about 50/50 depending on what you're actually buying.

THE CLOTHING: NOT FOR PEOPLE WHO DRESS WITH INTENTION

Let's get this out of the way fast. The apparel side of this collection is not Anti-Weeb approved.

The oversized tees at $45 are exactly what you'd expect from a sportswear brand licensing an anime property: bright colorways, loud graphics, no real design consideration beyond slapping Pikachu or Squirtle on a blank. The Mewtwo basketball jersey is activewear, full stop. The yellow hoodie at $80 is a single graphic on a standard PUMA blank. Nothing here is worth reaching for if you care about how your wardrobe fits together.

The track jacket and pants set in Alpine Snow is the closest the apparel comes to wearable, but even that reads more gym-to-brunch than anything elevated. Pass on the clothing unless you're shopping purely for comfort and fandom, not style.

THE SNEAKERS: THIS IS WHERE PUMA ACTUALLY SHOWED UP

Four pairs. A "Day and Night" concept pairing contrasting Pokémon together. Pikachu with Mimikyu. Espeon with Umbreon. The concept is smart and the execution on a few of these is genuinely good.

PUMA x Pokémon Fade Pikachu — $125 Energizing Yellow and PUMA Black. Bold. Recognizable. Not subtle. If you love Pikachu and want everyone to know it, these work. For Anti-Weeb purposes, the colorway makes them hard to style beyond very casual fits.

PUMA x Pokémon Fade Umbreon — $125 The PUMA Black and Energizing Yellow inversion of the Pikachu pair. Cleaner. The dark base makes these significantly easier to work into an outfit without building everything around them.

PUMA x Pokémon Mostro Espeon — $130 Pearl Pink and Strong Gray in shaggy pink suede. Interesting material choice. These are the most fashion-forward silhouette in the lineup but the pink suede is going to polarize. High risk, high reward.

PUMA x Pokémon Inverse Mimikyu — $110 Alpine Snow and PUMA Black on beige canvas. These are the ones.

THE STANDOUT: MIMIKYU WINS THIS WHOLE COLLAB

The Mimikyu pair is the most Anti-Weeb shoe in this entire collection and it's not close.

Beige canvas. Alpine Snow and black colorway. The Mimikyu reference is there for people who know it, completely invisible to people who don't. Nobody outside the Pokémon fandom is clocking these as anime sneakers. They read as clean, minimal canvas low-tops with a slightly off-white palette that pairs with almost anything.

At $110 they're the most affordable shoe in the lineup and arguably the most versatile. Straight-leg denim, wide-leg trousers, a clean monochrome fit — these slot in without demanding the outfit be built around them. That's the Anti-Weeb standard and these clear it.

HOW TO STYLE THE MIMIKYU PAIR ELEVATED

Real talk: the Mimikyu pair is the only one I'm actually reaching for. The others are cool to look at but the Mimikyu sneakers are the ones earning a spot in rotation.

The beige canvas and Alpine Snow colorway gives off serious Jonah Brown, Yeezy-adjacent energy. Think muted, earthy, intentionally understated. These fit right into that aesthetic without trying. Oversized earth tone fits, washed neutrals, relaxed silhouettes. Wide-leg oatmeal trousers with a vintage washed crewneck and a long overcoat. Or go full Yeezy-inspired with a monochrome taupe fit, straight-leg sweats, and nothing loud competing below the ankle.

The canvas texture works especially well with heavier fabrics. Wool coats, heavyweight fleece, raw denim. The more textured the outfit, the more intentional the Mimikyu pair looks sitting at the bottom of it.

Subtle enough for people who don't know Pokémon to just see a clean shoe. Specific enough for the people who do to immediately get it. That's the whole Anti-Weeb formula right there.

VERDICT 🔥🔥🔥

Anti-Weeb Clothing Rating: D-Tier. Skip it. Anti-Weeb Fashion Sneaker Rating: B-Tier overall. Mimikyu hits A-Tier.

PUMA understood the assignment on the sneakers and forgot about it entirely on the apparel. If you're shopping this collab, go straight to the Mimikyu pair, ignore everything else, and move on with your life. The 30th anniversary deserved a stronger clothing effort than oversized tees and a yellow hoodie, but the footwear saves this collab from being a full miss.

The Mimikyu sneakers drop April 2nd. Don't overthink it.
