Nineteen products. Seven retail pairs. Nine customizable builds with iconic battles from our favorite DBZ Arcs. The Converse Dragon Ball Z Chuck Taylors are here, and this collection has more range than the sneaker sites gave it credit for, once you actually dig into it.


What's In the Converse x Dragon Ball Z Collection

Retail gets seven shoes. A Shenron Chuck 70 anchors the group, dragon graphic wrapped across premium canvas. Six Chuck Taylor All Stars follow, one each for Goku, Vegeta, Frieza, Cell, Majin Buu, and Fusion, all finished with custom ankle patches and tongue details. Two of those, Buu and Fusion, only come in Little Kids sizing, which is worth knowing before you go looking for an adult pair that doesn't exist. Apparel adds a Shenron hoodie and two graphic tees, one Goku, one Shenron.



Then there's Converse By You, and this is where the collection actually gets interesting. Nine customizable presets, all $105, let you build a Chuck Taylor around Shenron, Goku, Gohan, Krillin, Piccolo, Dragon Balls, and two battle scenes, Frieza versus Goku and a Buu fight, plus Great Ape, Vegeta's most iconic transformation. That's the character depth this franchise deserves, Converse just chose to gate it behind the custom builder instead of giving it shelf space.


The Standout Pieces

Vegeta is still the strongest retail pair. The scouter detail is the kind of specific, character-literate design choice this genre of collab usually skips. Majin Buu comes in second, the character placement on the side isn't my first choice, but his face on the tongue saves it, that's a genuinely fun detail.

Frieza and Cell are well made and more restrained, but neither reads as timeless enough to earn permanent rotation. Vegeta's blue, by comparison, folds into an existing wardrobe far easier. That's the real test for a character shoe: not how it looks in the box, but whether it survives contact with the rest of your closet.


Here's the correction worth making publicly: earlier drafts of this review said Converse skipped Gohan, Krillin, Piccolo, and Great Ape entirely. That's not accurate. They're all in the Converse By You lineup. I don't love that some of these presets are just a single character slapped on a color option instead of getting a fully designed pair, and a few of them are built around specific battle moments from the sagas rather than a standalone character portrait, which changes the vibe from "collectible sneaker" to "custom project." But the ability to actually pick your color and character combination is a genuinely cool feature, and it's the reason the deeper cuts of this collection exist at all. If you've been wanting Krillin or Piccolo on your feet, this is currently the only way to get it.

This collection isn't chasing one type of Dragon Ball Z fan, and that's the smart move. The louder retail pairs are for people who want something unmistakable, the more restrained ones are for people who want the reference without the costume, and Converse By You quietly fills in the deeper character cuts for anyone willing to build it themselves. Docking points for gating Gohan, Krillin, Piccolo, and Great Ape behind a $105 custom build instead of giving them real product photography and their own drop moment. Still, these are Chuck Taylors. Bad execution wears out. A good pair of Chucks doesn't, people wear the same pair until it physically falls apart. That baseline quality keeps this collection worth owning if a piece speaks to you.
